Captain Calvin Slocumb is a native of Milwaukee, Wis. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1983, completed Broaden Opportunity for Officer Selection and Training School and received an NROTC Scholarship. Capt. Slocumb is a 1989 graduate of the University of Memphis, where he earned a bachelor's degree in English.

He also holds a master's degree in Systems Technology (Joint Command, Command, Communications, Computers and Intelligence Systems) from the Naval Postgraduate School, and a master's degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College. Capt. Slocumb is doctoral candidate at Salve Regina University.

As a recruit in basic training, he was awarded a Letter of Commendation, the Lion's Club Citizenship Award, and the Commanding Officer Recruit Training Command Captain's Trophy as the graduating Outstanding Recruit. As a midshipman, he earned his Enlisted Submarine Warfare Qualification aboard USS James Monroe (SSBN 622).

Capt. Slocumb's sea duty assignments include Communications Officer, Repair Division Officer and Auxiliaries Officer aboard USS Trenton (LPD 14); Main Propulsion Assistant and Assistant Chief Engineer aboard USS Peleliu (LHA 5); and Executive Officer aboard USS Vandegrift (FFG 48). He served as the final commanding officer of USS Cyclone (PC 1) from 1998 to 2000, which earned a battle "E" under his leadership prior to decommissioning. Capt. Slocumb was also commanding officer of USS Rushmore (LSD 47) from 2007 to 2009.

Ashore, Capt. Slocumb was selected as a Navy representative and instructor in the Texas Pre-Freshman Engineering Program and Upward Bound Program at Pan American University upon commissioning. He has also served as a Chief of Naval Operations OPNAV Fellow in the Operations Study Group as research analyst at the Center for Naval Analysis in Washington, D.C.; as a member of the Joint Staff Logistics Directorate; and as commanding officer of Pre-Commissioning Unit Green Bay (LPD 20) in Avondale, La.

Capt. Slocumb was also an instructor at the Command Leadership School in the Executive Officer Leadership course, and director of Material Readiness Department at the Surface Warfare Officers School Command in Newport, R.I.

Capt. Slocumb took command of Maritime Prepositioning Squadron Two March 7, 2012.

Capt. Slocumb is a designated Joint Qualified Officer, and his personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (two awards) and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation medal (three awards). He also earned the James V. Forrestal Award for excellence in strategy and force planning from the U.S. Naval War College.
