Kosovo Assessment

This information comes from the assessment conducted in country for the Kosovo report, which was published in September 2004. Although the existing company law in Kosovo is sound for the time being, an updated version that reflects modern, market-oriented principles – including an improved foundation for corporate governance – should be given urgent priority. The draft law that was rejected by the Assembly in 2004 was backward looking.

This report addresses the conditions and opportunities for doing business inKosovo’s agriculture sector. Through close examination of the relevant laws,institutions, and social dynamics, it aims to inform assistance decisions by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and other donors in the area of agricultural development in Ghana, as well as to provide insight and guidance about the sector to government officials, private sector representatives, and others.

As an integral part of its overall development strategy, Vietnam has linked a broad range of legal and judicial reforms to the implementation of the landmark U.S.-Vietnam Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), which came into effect on December 2001, and accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO), which was completed on January 11, 2007.

Company law and, in particular, corporate governance present a challenge, if not an obstacle, to economic development in the Philippines. Resulting from the historical underpinnings of colonialism, much of the corporate wealth in the Philippines is concentrated in a few families and large companies.

Pakistan Assessment

For decades, Pakistan has suffered from low levels of foreign investment, costly confrontation with India over the disputed Kashmir territory, and domestic political instability. Following President Musharraf’s rise to power in 1999, however, the country has endeavored to turn around its faltering economy.

Indonesia Assessment

This information comes from the assessment conducted in country for the Indonesia report, which was published in November 2007. The 1997 economic crisis in Southeast Asia affected the entire region, but devastated Indonesia in particular. The crisis culminated in political upheaval. In the spring of 1998, a new president replaced the 32-year dictatorship of General Suharto. In the aftermath, as the corruption and poor governance of the recent past became more fully exposed, a new commitment to democracy and strengthened institutions emerged.

Afghanistan Assessment

This information comes from the assessment conducted in country for the Afghanistan report, which was published in August 2007. Afghanistan is a land-locked Islamic Republic of about 30 million inhabitants located in the mountainous region of Central Asia between Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, China, and Pakistan. It is predominantly an agrarian economy, and it has been long considered a loose confederation consisting of disparate peoples separated by harsh terrain, language, local politics, and tribal affiliations.
