Last week, President Obama announced that he will fulfill his campaign pledge to end the war in Iraq by the end of the month. Today, he’s meeting with his national security team to discuss U.S. actions in the country, according to the White House schedule.

By the end of August, the U.S. military strategy in Iraq will shift from combat operations to supporting and training Iraqi security forces, Obama said in his address at the Disabled Americans Veterans convention in Georgia last Monday.

“By the end of this month, we’ll have brought more than 90,000 of our troops home from Iraq since I took office—more than 90,000 have come home,” he said. “Our commitment in Iraq is changing—from a military effort led by our troops to a civilian effort led by our diplomats.”

What do you think of Obama’s decision?

  1. We should have NEVER attacked iraq in the first place. How the hell did bush go from afghanistan and switch to iraq.

our jobs in america failed because of this war in iraq. We send OUR tax american dollars to iraq and israel and the middle east . We have our own buliding we americans have to do look at our poor inner cities and our school and our education. bush and cheney should have been FIRED a long long time ago.

NO AMERICAN BLOOD FOR OIL — this is a message to all republicans/GOP and democrats and Israeli’s american lobbyist who voted to attack iraq and murdered iraqi women and children just like the nazi’s who murdered 6 million innocent people.

  2. This is a really complicated issue. Ideally you would want a civilian led effort to solve the problems with Afghanistan, but is it realistic? There is no bargaining with the Taliban, and everyone knows this. So instead, the hearts and minds of the Afghan people must be won. But this is easier said than done by FAR. Fear is a great motivator, and if the Taliban can strike fear into the Afghan people, what good will diplomats do?

I mean, for example, what good is building schools to educate women in Afghanistan if it will provoke the Taliban to splash battery acid in the faces of the pupils of said schools?

I am interested to see what the administration will do to protect the Afghan people from the Taliban in cases like this.

  13. I think President has made a great decision to end war. The war has been going on for seven years. It needs to stop. Think about all the tax dollars that have been spent. Think about all the children at home without a father. All the wife’s at home without a husband. So obama will stay true to his pledge and SEND OUR TROOPS HOME.
