Newark Man Arrested, Brothers Charged with Possessing Firearms In Connection with Newark Shootout
NEWARK, N.J. – Davion Jackson, 27, of Irvington, N.J., appeared in federal court today following his arrest this morning on a firearms offense connected to a Newark shootout, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman announced.
Davion Jackson and his brother Rashan Jackson, 22, also of Irvington, are charged in a criminal Complaint with being felons in possession of firearms discovered following an exchange of gunfire with others that occurred on Littleton Avenue in Newark, N.J., in July 2010. Davion Jackson, who was detained following today’s proceeding, was arrested by agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in Linden, N.J. The brothers were previously charged with related state offenses. Rashan Jackson was already detained on an unrelated matter, and is expected to appear to face the charge in federal court at a date to be determined.
According to the Complaint filed yesterday in Newark federal court: On July 25, 2010, Newark police officers responded to reports of a shooting that occurred near 279 Littleton Avenue in Newark. Upon arriving at the scene, officers encountered defendants Davion Jackson and Rashan Jackson in the immediate vicinity. Davion Jackson had a gunshot wound to his arm, and Rashan Jackson had a gunshot wound to his leg.
The officers followed a blood trail which led to a Smith and Wesson 9-millimeter handgun and a Vulcan .45-caliber handgun, which were both found in a washing machine. The firearms offense carries a maximum potential penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
U.S. Attorney Fishman credited special agents of the ATF, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Matthew Horace; the Newark Police Department, under the direction of Director Garry McCarthy; as well as the New Jersey State Police and the Office of the Essex County Prosecutor for the investigation leading to today’s charges. The investigation is ongoing.
The charges and allegations contained in the Complaint are merely accusations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
