Nobel prize for chemistry from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, 1985: - Dr. Jerome Karle, 1985, head of NRL's Laboratory for the Structure of Matter, for "outstanding achievements in the development of direct methods for the determination of crystal structures."
Federal Laboratory Consortium Award for Excellence in Technology Transfer: - Dr. Norman Koons, 1988, for development of magnetic materials that are used in the permanent magnet industry.
Wolf Foundation Prize for Physics (Israel): - Dr. Herbert Friedman, 1987, for "achievements in the pioneering research that opened the field of solar x-ray astronomy and contributions to the rapidly growing field of extra-solar x-ray astronomy."
President's Award for Distinguished Federal Civilian service: - Dr. Jerome Karle, 1986, for "achievements in new fundamental revolutionary concepts and development of new theoretical implications."
Federal Laboratory Consortium Award for Excellence in Technology Transfer: - Howard Lessoff, 1986, for management of and participation in the development of a cost-saving method for GaAs crystal production and for transfer of the technology to industry.
