Summary

The Inspector General testified on the future of intercity passenger rail and Amtrak before the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee. He discussed options to reconfigure Amtrak's long-distance trains to complement a rail network built around higher speed/high-frequency corridors, greater state participation in determining service attributes and covering operating losses, and a stable, long-term Federal funding source for capital grants. Deputy Secretary Michael Jackson and Amtrak President and CEO David Gunn also testified.
