Novel H1N1 Influenza

World now at the start of 2009 influenza pandemic - WHO - June 11
On the basis of available evidence and expert assessments of the evidence, the scientific criteria for an influenza pandemic have been met. The Director-General of WHO has therefore decided to raise the level of influenza pandemic alert from phase 5 to phase 6.

Novartis Produces (H1N1) Swine Flu Vaccine - VOA News - June 12

Cholera in Zimbabwe and Neighboring Countries - CDC - June 12
From August 26, 2008, through June 8, 2009, 98,522 suspected cases and 4,282 deaths have been reported in the country. The worst-affected areas are the capital city of Harare (19,544 cases and 655 deaths), Mashonaland West (22,753 cases and 946 deaths) and Manicaland (13,649 cases and 661 deaths).

FDA Warns Consumers Not to Use Skin Products Made by Clarcon Due to Bacterial Contamination Risk Products marketed under various names - FDA - June 8
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced today that Clarcon Biological Chemistry Laboratory Inc. of Roy, Utah, is voluntarily recalling some skin sanitizers and skin protectants marketed under several different brand names because of high levels of disease-causing bacteria found in the product during a recent inspection. The FDA is warning consumers to not use any Clarcon products.

Surveillance for Foodborne Disease Outbreaks - United States, 2006 - MMWR CDC - June 12
Foodborne illnesses are a major health burden in the United States (1). Most of these illnesses are preventable, and analysis of outbreaks helps identify control measures. Although most cases are sporadic, investigation of the portion that occur as part of recognized outbreaks can provide insights into the pathogens, food vehicles, and food-handling practices associated with foodborne infections.
