Why We Exist:
More than a half million Americans do not have a place to call home each night, and half of them are without shelter. At least two million people find themselves homeless at some point each year.
More than 124,000 people have nowhere to call home for years on end. These are the people experiencing long-term homelessness, who often also confront mental illness, substance addiction, life-threatening illness or serious health problems. Many more individuals and families are at risk of long-term homelessness.
The Solution: Permanent Supportive Housing
Supportive housing is affordable housing linked to accessible mental health, substance addiction, employment, and other support services. Supportive housing provides people who are homeless for the long term with a way out of expensive emergency public services and back into their own homes and communities.
What We Do:
Since 1991, CSH advances its mission by providing advocacy, expertise, leadership, and financial resources to make it easier to create and operate supportive housing. CSH has offices in eleven states (California, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Rhode Island, and Texas) and in Washington, DC, and provides limited assistance to many other communities.
