This chart shows the number of alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) in use in the United States between 1995 and 2009. The number of AFVs in use has been increasing steadily during the past 15 years, largely due to federal policies that encourage and incentivize the manufacture, sale, and use of vehicles that use non-petroleum fuels. AFVs in widest use today are those that run on E85, propane, electricity, and compressed natural gas.
