OIG Investigation of Responses to Information About a Serious Flaw in Aircraft Cables

March 02, 2001
Project ID: CC-2000-290

Summary

We concluded that the FAA failed to notify the public in a timely manner about a serious flaw in aircraft cables manufactured by the Strandflex Company, Oriskany, NY, in an investigation conducted at the request of Reps. DeFazio, LaHood, and Lipinski. We confirmed that just over one year had passed from the time the FAA received initial notification of suspect cable from the DOD until the date the FAA published an Unapproved Parts Notification (UPN). The FAA agreed to implement numerous changes to improve overall processing of UPNs.
