This chart shows average fuel economy of major vehicle categories in the United States. Transit buses, refuse trucks, and paratransit shuttles have relatively low fuel economy. Class 8 trucks, which typically carry heavy loads, also have relatively low fuel economy. For comparison, see Average Per-Passenger Fuel Economy and Average Annual Fuel Use of Major Vehicle Categories.
