The conventional biofuels category is defined as any fuel produced from starch (primarily ethanol derived from corn starch). Federal legislation provided yearly RFS volume requirements for each renewable fuel category. EPA updates volume requirements each year based on fuel availability. In 2010 and 2011, conventional renewable fuel (corn ethanol) consumption exceeded EISA and EPA requirements due to favorable corn ethanol economics.
