This chart shows the composition of the cost that consumers paid for domestically produced foods in 2010. The farm value (commodity) of the food has generally been decreasing and now commands about 10% of the total consumer expenditure. This highlights the fact that an increase in corn or soy prices due to higher biofuels demand would have a muted effect on the total cost of food. Conversely, the share of cost attributable to foods services, such as restaurants and caterers, has generally been increasing and now commands nearly 35% of the food cost.
