This chart shows soybean and corn prices in the United States, adjusted for inflation, from 1886 to 2008. As with other agricultural commodities, prices for corn and soybeans fluctuate due to a number of complex factors, including adverse regional weather conditions, major wars, oil prices, global currency fluctuations, and market speculation. This chart shows that, when corrected for inflation, both corn and soy prices are near all-time lows. This trend runs counter to the argument that ethanol and biodiesel production are driving corn and soy prices (respectively) to unsustainable levels.
