About USAID/Kyrgyzstan

USAID began providing assistance to Kyrgyzstan in 1992, soon after the country became independent. Since that time, the American people through USAID have provided approximately $460 million in programs that assist the development of the country’s economic sector, healthcare system, and democratic institutions. USAID programs cooperate with ministries, governmental and non-government organizations, businesses, and communities to improve laws, create jobs, increase incomes, improve services, and better manage available resources.

USAID has supported health systems reform in Kyrgyzstan, helped to improve tax administration system, supported strengthened budget development, assisted in the development of commercial law, and helped create and strengthen NGOs and independent media. More recently, USAID has focused its assistance to improve Kyrgyzstan’s business environment and increase country’s attractiveness to foreign investors, to institutionalize democratic governance in the country, and to help the Kyrgyz Government in responding to the threats of tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS.

USAID operates under a bilateral agreement with the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic, and is the largest single-country donor organization in Kyrgyzstan. USAID programs in Kyrgyzstan are implemented through contracts and grants by more than 40 local and international organizations, for profit companies, and non-governmental organizations.
