"Public Safety De-escalation Training for Military Veterans in Crisis"

(Please scroll down to view upcoming courses)

The number of returning military personnel experiencing post deployment mental illness and behavioral disorders has increased markedly in the midst of multiple deployments in several war and combat-related actions over the past several years. This training provides public safety personnel the knowledge, skills, and abilities to defuse crisis situations that can arise when combat veterans reintegrate into their communities.

UMCPI is honored to have received funding from the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services to deliver this training initiative in 15 locations throughout the U.S.

Target Audience*
The target audience for this training is public safety first responding personnel i.e. law enforcement, 911 operators, EMS, etc.

*(Please note: this course is not intended to teach hostage negotiations or SWAT Team tactics.  The focus is on verbal strategies and communication skills).

Course Overview:
This course addresses converging conditions that may indicate a higher risk for stress-related disorders, identifies mental illnesses and behavior disorders, and provides de-escalation techniques to defuse crisis situations without the use of force. Causal factors of military veteran stress-related conditions are identified to address focus areas that psychologists identify as underlying themes in many veteran-related interactions. Proven techniques and case studies are presented to create dialogue, rapport and common reference points for application of negotiation and de-escalation principles. Officer safety principles are emphasized to offset the increased risk that may be encountered by public safety personnel in these situations. This course is presented using a unique training team consisting of an experienced law enforcement professional/trainer and an experienced military veteran/trainer.
