Physician Loses FAA Medical Certificate Over Test Readings

November 30, 2001

Summary

Alan Kaplan, M.D., of Manchester, NH, an FAA Aviation Medical Examiner (AME), entered into a pretrial diversion program with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Hampshire, in lieu of being prosecuted for failing to inform FAA that another doctor in his practice had a different interpretation of some cardiac test results than did Dr. Kaplan. OIG investigated allegations that Dr. Kaplan provided inaccurate and improperly interpreted cardiology test results. Kaplan voluntarily resigned his AME certificate and was fired from the cardiology practice. As a part of the agreement, prosecution will be deferred if Kaplan meets certain conditions.
