Impact of Split Sleep of Driver Fatigue (alertness and health)
FMCSA’s new Hours-of-Service (HOS) Regulations for drivers who utilize truck sleeper berths require a primary sleep period of 8 hours in the berth and a second two-hour period. Some drivers have argued that they need more flexibility in splitting their sleep by utilizing a shorter primary period than the regulations allow. Two leading researchers in the field of operator fatigue reported that new research coming from laboratory studies is finding that splitting the primary sleep period into two periods results in equal or better alertness levels. However, these studies also indicate that the time of day (i.e., phase of the circadian cycle) is critically important. This study will examine and evaluate the effects of various split sleep regimens on both driver performance and health.
