Development and Assessment of Multiple Sensors for a Driver Fatigue Monitoring System
This study evaluates the use of multiple sensors to include percentage of eye closure (PERCLOS) to evaluate alertness monitoring in a commercial motor vehicle. A system is needed that could quantify driver fatigue and provide a real time warning to the driver and/or a control output to the vehicle or other systems as warranted. The proposed system will be required to operate independently in a wide range of environmental conditions and with varying quantities and qualities of sensor input. A review of existing related technologies and their applications is required, as is analysis of the conditions under which the system must operate. Subsequent tasks would focus on the derivation of a fatigue assessment model using data from surveys, naturalistic studies, and other sources. Hardware and commercial motor vehicle development tasks would also be performed concurrently during the initial portion of the study. Off-the-shelf technology, such as camera systems and microprocessors in their current state of advancement, would be used for this project. Development of this fatigue assessment algorithm may require advance programming and statistical techniques such as neural network use.
