Truck Simulator Validation (SimVal) Study (for Driver Training and CDL Purposes)

The Truck Simulator Validation Study will determine if simulator technology enhances entry level, tractor-trailer driver training and real-world safety performance (longitudinal study). The entry-level aspect of the study involves four groups of drivers: a Long Conventional Group trained in a tractor-trailer; a Simulator Group trained principally in a simulator; a CDL-Focused Group trained at CDL Mill Schools; and a No-Training Group who trained on their own or informally by a family member or friend. SimVal will also assess the advanced capabilities of the simulator to replicate emergency/evasive maneuvers and extreme operating conditions (e.g., steep hills) and other weather conditions. The potential of using simulators to expand and enhance commercial driver license (CDL) programs will also be explored.

Leveraging the results of the SimVal Study, future research will explore with the trucking industry and states, the interest, operational impediments, benefits, and costs, of using a simulator to enhance the CDL Skills Test. For example, a simulator could be used to screen CDL applicants before they are road tested. A simulator could also be used to expand the CDL skills tests, and require a simulator test where only a written test is currently employed (e.g., doubles, triples, and tanker vehicles). Future research will also explore motorcoach simulators as well.

Depending on the results of the Viability of Simulator for the CDL Program, this study will conduct a field operational test (FOT) focused on the use of a simulator specifically for CDL purposes (e.g., applicant screening, tankers, doubles/triples, which now only require a knowledge test) and ability of the applicants to handle virtual emergency and evasive maneuvers and various weather conditions. Currently, these tests are not conducted at all on the CDL. It is envisioned that the study will include both a truck and motorcoach simulators in multiple states. It will collect real world driver data and general feedback from CDL applicants, and information for the states testing this technology during the FOT.
