Within the DOI in 2009, 493 officers were assaulted. Of these officers, 127 sustained injuries. The following provides information by agency within the DOI.

Bureau of Indian Affairs:
394 officers were assaulted, and 102 of these officers were injured.
Bureau of Land Management:
10 officers were assaulted, and 1 of these officers was injured.
National Park Service:
85 officers were assaulted, 24 of whom were injured.
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service:
4 officers were assaulted, but none of these officers were injured.

Type of activity

At the time of their attacks, officers from the DOI were performing the following activities:

270 officers were making arrests or serving summonses.
132 officers were on patrol or guard duty.
43 officers were maintaining custody of prisoners.
21 officers were conducting investigations or searches.
10 officers were assigned to office duty.
3 officers were assigned to protection duty.
14 officers were performing other official duties.

Weapons

Weapons that were used against the DOI officers during the attacks include the following:

269 of the 493 DOI officers were attacked with personal weapons, such as hands, fists, or feet.
24 of the DOI officers were attacked with vehicles.
16 officers were attacked with blunt instruments.
14 of the officers were attacked with firearms.
14 of the officers were attacked with knives or other cutting instruments.
156 officers were attacked with other types of dangerous weapons.

Dispositional information

Law enforcement authorities identified 466 suspects in the assaults on DOI officers. At the time of this report, dispositional information was available for 196 suspects:

70 suspects were awaiting trial.
63 suspects were found guilty.
Prosecution was declined for 36 suspects.
20 offenders were found not guilty or the charges were dismissed.
Prosecutive opinion was pending for 3 offenders.
2 offenders were deceased.
1 offender was found incompetent to stand trial.
1 offender was a fugitive.
