Upcoming Weekend Activities: January 7th and 8th

Burn off some holiday calories this weekend by bundling up and getting active outdoors. Prefer to stay warm inside? We’ve got a list of great suggestions for both options below: 

“After the Holidays” E-waste Event: The Lower East Side Ecology Center is bringing this 9th annual event to neighborhoods across all five boroughs this January to help you responsibly recycle of all of your unwanted or broken gadgets. A list of acceptable materials can be found here, and location details can be found on their website.  Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m.–4 p.m.

Family Art Project: Sunrise, Sunset: Looking to the sky’s palette of colors, infused with shades of dusk or dawn, blend and blur paint and tissue-paper dyes against a silhouette of forest, city skyline or river and bridge to create an inspirational scene at Wave Hill, a public garden and cultural center in the Bronx. Saturday and Sunday from10  a.m.–1 p.m. 

Holiday Train Show at the New York Botanical Garden: Don’t miss the second to last weekend of this fantastic display of New York City landmarks made of plant parts such as nuts, bark, and leaves. Open daily (except Mondays) from 10 a.m. through January 16, 2012. 

Job Search Boot Camp at the Queens Library: Spend one day at the library and learn all the best strategies for finding a job! By the end of the day, you and your resume will be “fit” to find your best job. Saturday, January 7, 10:30 a.m. to noon – Winning Resumes & Cover Letters; 12:30 to 2 p.m.- Effective Job Search Strategies; 3 to 4:30 p.m.- Acing the Interview.

Removing Invasive Plants: Join the Van Cortlandt Park Conservancy to help remove invasive plants and get the park ready for the New Year. All ages welcome. Students earn community service hours! Layers, shoes, long pants and long sleeves are highly recommended. Saturday, January 7 from 10 a.m.- 1 p.m. 

Wilderness Survival: What would you do if you found yourself lost in the woods? Do you know how to build your own shelter, or start a fire without matches? What would you eat and where would you find water? Do you have what it takes to survive in the wild? During this fun, family friendly program you will learn tips and tricks directly from the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation’s Urban Park Rangers that will enhance your knowledge of the natural world. Saturday, January 7, at 1 p.m. ages 8 and older.
