Current Activities
Merrill Gosho conducts research and photo-identification studies of gray whales that do not complete the northbound migration into the Bering and Chukchi Seas but instead feed along the Pacific coasts of the United States and Canada. He also conducts research on California and Steller sea lions, which involves capturing, marking, and resighting sea lions along the coasts of Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia.
Background
Merrill graduated from the University of Washington with a B.S. in oceanography, B.A. in zoology, and M.S. in fisheries biology. He has served as a whaling observer for the International Whaling Commission in Japan and previously worked on Dall’s porpoise in the high-seas driftnet fisheries.
