Current Activities
Manuel Castellote is currently applying acoustic techniques to study cetaceans, with emphasis on beluga whales, in Alaska and other northwest regions. Acoustic tools allow better understanding their movement patterns, habitat use and population distributions that are not yet clearly defined. His research is also focused in measuring the contribution of anthropogenic noise to cetacean habitats to further understand its effect in their behavior.
Background
Manuel Castellote is a Spanish citizen working for the NMMLs Cetacean Assessment and Ecology Program as Research Associate. He has a B.S. in Biology, an equivalent of a M.S. in Marine Biology and a Ph.D. in Psychobiology. His main interest is using acoustics as a tool to improve the knowledge of behavioral ecology of cetaceans for their conservation. He is also interested in the effect of anthropogenic noise in cetacean communication, in particular mysticete species, and is involved in noise regulation reviews. His experience includes studies from both wild and captive environments.
