Step into the Sun
(with Sunscreen, of course): NYC Weekend Activities

2012 July 12

Mid-July means that summer is in mid-swing. Take advantage of fun, free, environmentally-conscious events located outdoors while the weather is still blissful!

Basic Canoeing: Who says you can’t canoe in Manhattan? The NYC Parks Department’s Urban Park Rangers will lead you on a canoe adventure at the Harlem Meer in Central Park. Children 8 years old and up are welcome. Sunday, July 15, noon – 3 p.m.

Central Park Bagel Bark: Munch on free bagels and pastries (and dog treats for the canines, of course) while enjoying your morning coffee with fellow dog lovers and their pawed pals during off-leash hours. Get some fresh air for you and your dog this Saturday morning! July 14, 7:30 – 9 a.m.

Kayak Staten Island: In honor of New York City Water Week, Kayak Staten Island and Conference House Park Conservancy announce the Third Annual Raritan Bay Festival. On the beach, Kayak Staten Island offers free equipment and tips on kayaking to both children and adults. They will also be providing free fishing demonstrations. Starting at noon, popular area musicians and bands will provide nonstop music. There are also water slides, an aquarium petting zoo, as well as crafts and food. Saturday, July 14, noon-5 p.m.

Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC) : This year, the LAMC lineup includes Mexican five-piece Kinky, Argentinean rockers Los Auténticos Decadentes, tribal DJ group 3Ball MTY and DJ Raff from Chile, who was a main force in bringing hip-hop to Latin America. It’s guaranteed to be a high-energy, nonstop dance party (or, ok, fiesta) in the park. Saturday, July 14, 3 – 7 p.m.

Shape Up NYC: African Dance: Though this event will take place on Monday, add it to your free time (and free of charge) celebrations – make yourself feel like you’re getting an extra-long weekend by dancing Monday evening away. More Information

African Dance is a high energy, low impact fitness class that incorporates aerobic exercise to improve fitness, weight loss, cardiovascular health, flexibility and rhythm. Monday, July 16, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.

Tragedy and ”Saturday Night Fever” Screening: Setting Barry Gibb’s falsetto vocals to metal is hilarious, but it’s also a natural fit. The results are mesmerizing. After the all-metal tribute to the Bee Gees plays, fans can watch Saturday Night Fever” in the Prospect Park. Saturday, July 14. Doors open at 6 p.m., show starts at 7:30 p.m.

Yoga on the Beach: The city heat is not the only way to make you sweat in summer – try yoga on the beach and enjoy both the morning rays and the relaxing workout. Come to Rockaway Beach and worship the ocean views and cooling breeze before you start your Saturday. Yoga instructors from Elaine’s Dance School will lead this free beginner hatha yoga class. Don’t forget your mat – or better yet, your beach towel! Saturday, July 14, 8 – 9 a.m.
