Upcoming Weekend Activities: Labor Day Fun!
Start the Labor Day weekend with a relaxing hike, fishing excursion or boat ride here in the city. There are great, family-friendly events happening in all five boroughs this weekend, and they’re all free!
Big City Fishing at Hudson River Park: Come learn to fish with the Hudson River Park Trust, who will also give an introduction to ecology and water quality and talk about the many fish species that live in Hudson River Park’s Estuarine Sanctuary. Friday, Sept. 2, Saturday, Sept. 3 and Sunday, Sept. 4, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, weather permitting.
Birding in Brooklyn: Grab your binoculars and join the NYC Parks Department’s Urban Park Rangers for a bird watching outing at Brooklyn’s Salt Marsh Marine Center in Marine Park. Saturday, Sept. 3, 8:00 a.m.
Canoeing, Kayaking and Rowing: Opportunities abound for boating this weekend around the city, including your last chance this year to kayak or row at the Brooklyn Bridge Park Boathouse.

– Basic Canoeing, Salt Marsh Nature Center in Queens, Saturday, Sept. 3, 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

– Intermediate Canoeing at Inwood Hill Nature Center in Manhattan, Sunday, Sept. 4, 1:30 p.m.–4:30 p.m.
– Kayaking on the Hudson River at Riverside Park, Sunday, Sept. 4, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
– Kayaking and Community Rowing at Brooklyn Bridge Park Boathouse (Pier 1) , Saturday, Sept. 3 and Monday, Sept. 5, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day.
Garden Walking Tour in Manhattan’s Fort Tryon Park: Discover which plants are in bloom, and learn about the gardens’ history, future and secrets from a member of Fort Tryon’s expert horticulture staff. Sunday, Sept. 4, 1:00 p.m to 2:00 p.m.
Nature Exploration Hike in Staten Island: The Urban Park Ranger hiking guides will introduce you to the hidden gems of New York City – Conference House Park in this case – and places often off limits to the general public. Sunday, Sept. 4, 2 p.m.
Saltwater fishing in Queens: Join the Urban Park Rangers at Alley Pond Park Environmental Center in Queens for a tutorial on salt water fishing. Saturday, Sept. 3, 10 a.m.
Textile Recycling at Greenmarkets: GrowNYC collects old clothing, paired shoes, bedding, linens, hats, handbags, belts and fabric scraps (36″ x 36″ or larger) that are sold for reuse or turned into wiping rags, fiber for car seats and insulation. Friday, Sept. 2 at the 97th St. Greenmarket, Saturday, Sept 3 at the Union Square, Inwood, Grand Army Plaza, Fort Greene and McCarren Park Greenmarkets, Sunday Sept. 4 at the Tompkins Square and Jackson Heights Greenmarkets, and Monday, Sept. 5 at the Union Square Greenmarket. Collections run from 8 a.m. until each Greenmarket closes, which varies by location.

The Birding in Brooklyn was absolutely awesome! I’ve been tempted by bird watching a number of times, but it wasn’t until I was really able to see birds particularly well after buying admittedly expensive, but very good quality binoculars that I really became enthusiastic about what I was able to see, identify, and learn about.
Missed the fishing this year. Hopefully wont miss next time. Heard from friends that a lot of Shad was in Hudson.
