Commercial Driver' s License (CDL) Program Improvement Grant - FAQ

Q1. Am I eligible for a CDL grant to help with the costs of attending a truck driver training school?

A1. No. At this time FMCSA does not award grants to individuals to assist in receiving actual training for operating a commercial motor vehicle. However, some training schools do provide direct financial assistance. Also, if the training school is associated with a technical college or community college that is recognized by the United States Department of Education, attendees may be eligible for financial assistance. See www.studentaid.ed.gov for more information.

Q2. I am an owner-operator and would like to expand my business by purchasing an additional commercial motor vehicle. Am I eligible for a CDL grant for this purpose?

A2. No. At this time FMCSA does not award grants to individuals or business owners to assist in expanding their business capacity. However, assistance may be available from the Small Business Administration. See www.sba.gov for more information.

Q3. I operate a training school to teach individuals how to drive commercial motor vehicles. I would like to purchase a simulator to assist in training. This would help make drivers safer on the roads. Is this an eligible project?

A3. No. Even though advanced training is an important aspect of improving highway safety, at this time FMCSA does not award grants to individuals or business owners to assist in expanding their business capacity. However, assistance may be available from the Small Business Administration. See www.sba.gov for more information.
