This technical seminar is designed primarily for economists, statisticians,
researchers, analysts, and managers responsible for designing, conducting,
and analyzing statistical surveys in national statistical programs. Participants should have an elementary
knowledge of statistical methods and some experience in producing labor or social data.
Objectives
To strengthen participants capability to conduct statistical surveys by:
- Developing an understanding of the basic principles of survey design
- Applying observational and experimental methods to improve the quality of survey data
- Employing theoretical, applied, and evaluative research to reduce non-sampling error and improve response rates
Program content
The Survey Methods seminar will focus on the statistical and behavioral science
issues relevant to improving survey methods and the quality of statistical output.
It will present important statistical concepts and techniques in sample design, execution,
and estimation, as well as models of behavior describing errors in responding to survey questions.
Participants are encouraged to bring examples of surveys, including methodology, questionnaires, and
publications of results from their own countries to use in discussions and workshops.
The seminar includes discussions on the following topics:
- Sampling techniques
- Variance
- Non-response issues
- Interview techniques
- Questionnaire design
- Constructing effective interview questions
- Alternative modes of data collection
- Focus groups
