Commander recognizes ranger training graduate

A graduate of the Tulsa District Park Ranger Training Program was recognized in a ceremony Feb. 7 at the district headquarters. Ranger Jeff Walker, Skiatook Lake graduated the program, which is designed to manage recruitment for the district’s natural resource management program and prepare trainees to work as a park ranger.

Col. Michael Teague, Tulsa District commander, recently participated on a water panel during the Western States Land Commissioners Association winter meeting in Oklahoma City. Bob Portiss, Port of Catoosa director, and Steven Greetham, Chief General Counsel for the Chickasaw Nation Division of Commerce, also participated in the panel.

Drought Update, Feb. 7

Approximately 57 percent of the lower 48 states of the country remained in some level of drought. Most of the Tulsa District, which includes the Red River and Arkansas River watersheds, was in extreme to exceptional drought.

Altus Air Force Base JP8 Fuel Line Reestablished

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Tulsa District is scheduled to begin replacing a Jet Propellant 8 fuel line here that will increase ground refueling capabilities for KC-135 Stratotankers, Jan. 23.

ALTUS AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. – Col. Casey Eaton, 97th Air Mobility Wing vice commander, speaks at the Jet Propellant 8 Fuel Transfer Line groundbreaking, Jan. 23. The groundbreaking was held to kick-off the reestablishment of a steel pipeline, which will connect the bulk fuel storage area to the tanker ramp providing a reliable and efficient way to refuel KC-135 Stratotankers. Eaton spoke about all of the work performed by Altus AFB and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to get to where they are now, reestablishing the fuel line for a more reliable and efficient transfer. Kansas lakes may appear to be frozen during the winter months, but an important thing to remember is there is no such thing as safe ice.

Visitors to Canton Lake, Okla., will find new restroom facilities at the Canadian “A” north and south campgrounds. The facilities replace the ones that were destroyed by a May 24, 2011 tornado.

Two robotics teams compete head-to-head with the autonomous LEGO MINDSTORM robots they programmed to perform specific functions as the judges watch. The teams were competing in the Tulsa FIRST LEGO League qualifying event Nov. 10 at Memorial High School. The robots carry out the functions on a 4 by 8 foot surface. The FIRST LEGO League is a robotics program designed to get children excited about science and technology while teaching them employment and life skills.

Approximately 62% of the lower 48 states of the country remained in some level of drought. Most of our District was in severe to exceptional drought. Evapotranspiration rates have at least declined, resulting in a slower drawdown of our lakes. According to the National Weather Service, 2012 is on track to be the warmest year on record in Tulsa and Fort Smith. The last 180 days have been the 4th driest statewide in Oklahoma.
