2012 Accelerator Update Archive

April 27, 2012 - April 30, 2012

NuMI reported receiving 7.67E18 protons on target for the period from 4/23/12 to 4/30/12.

  • The Booster developed an aperture restriction that required lower beam intensity
  • Main Injector personnel completed their last study
  • The shutdown begins
  • Linac, MTA, and Booster will continue using beam for one or two more weeks
  • Linac will supply the Neutron Therapy Facility beam for most of the shutdown

April 25, 2012 - April 27, 2012

  • Booster beam stop problem repaired
  • Beam to all experiments will shut off at midnight on Monday morning, 4/30/12. Main Injector will continue to take beam until 6 AM on Monday morning. Linac, the Neutron Therapy Facility, MTA, and Booster will continue using beam for one or two more weeks. The Fermi Accelerator Complex will be in shutdown for approximately one year

April 23, 2012 - April 25, 2012

  • NuMI permit trips due to power supply problems.
  • Muon ring studies.

April 20, 2012 - April 23, 2012

NuMI reported receiving 7.92E18 protons on target for the period from 4/16/12 to 4/23/12.

  • Muon Ring given permission to receive 120 GeV beam
  • Booster RF station 11 tripped off many time over the weekend
  • MiniBooNE completes its run for this year and begins its shutdown one week early

April 18, 2012 - April 20, 2012

  • SeaQuest conducted a study that confirmed its beam intensity
  • Fermi Test Beam Facility experiment T-1015 began taking beam
  • Many machines conducted maintenance during a Transport access for vacuum work

April 16, 2012 - April 18, 2012

  • A ferrite rod from a Main Injector microwave absorber broke away and fell into the beam
  • A Linac RF station (LRF4) required repairs
  • FTBF experiments T-992 and T-1005 completed their run

April 13, 2012 - April 16, 2012

NuMI reported receiving 9.15E18 protons on target for the period from 4/9/12 to 4/16/12.

  • Fermi Test Beam Facility experiments T-922 and T-1005 taking beam
  • SeaQuest continues to commission their beamline
  • All of the machines continue to send beam to their users and conduct studies
  • Only two more weeks of beam before the shutdown

  • Linac switched to using the H- Source
  • Fermi Test Beam Facility experiment T-1005 begins taking beam
  • T-992 continues to take beam

  • Fermi Test Beam Facility experiment T-992 continues to take beam
  • A Linac Klystron RF station (KRF4) developed a water leak and its tube was replaced
  • A Booster kicker (MP02) began causing MiniBooNE beam permit trips

April 4, 2012 - April 6, 2012

  • SeaQuest continues to commission their beamline
  • Muon Ring personnel conduct studies

April 2, 2012 - April 4, 2012

  • Booster, Main Injector, and Muon Ring personnel all conducted studies
  • Linac personnel switched from H- Source to the I- Source
  • A Linac Klystron RF station (KRF4) went out of phase and caused about 30 minutes of downtime

March 30, 2012 - April 2, 2012

NuMI reported receiving 9.05E18 protons on target for the period from 3/26/12 to 4/2/12.

  • The NuMI, MiniBooNE, SeaQuest, and T-992 experiments all took beam
  • Muon Ring personnel conducted muon yield studies
  • MI personnel conducted g-2 (g minus 2) studies
  • MTA took beam

March 28, 2012 - March 30, 2012

  • SeaQuest continues to commission the beam line
  • Fermi Test Beam Facility experiment T-992 begins taking beam
  • Lightning strike caused Linac, Booster, and main Injector trips

  • The Muon Accelerator Program (MAP) received permission to take beam in the MTA line
  • Muon Ring personnel conduct studies
  • SeaQuest continues to commission its beamline

  • The Recycler is officially off: partial decommissioning will begin next month
  • There is a LCW leak in the MI-62 LCW system
  • SeaQuest beam commissioning continues
  • FTBF experiment T-1008 completed it run

March 9, 2012 - March 12, 2012

NuMI reported receiving 7.84E18 protons on target for the period from 3/5/12 to 3/12/12.

  • Neutron Therapy Facility treated a patient
  • NuMI, MiniBooNE, SeaQuest, and Fermi Test Beam Facility experiment T-1008 all took beam
  • Technicians repaired a NuMI kicker (I:KPS6N)
  • Linac personnel repaired two Linac RF stations (LRF3 and LRF4)

March 7, 2012 - March 9, 2012

  • Booster personnel ungraded BRF2
  • Operations and External Beamline personnel reported that they had sent beam to the SeaQuest target
  • Fermi Test Beam Facility experiment T-1008 continues to take beam

March 5, 2012 - March 7, 2012

  • Water Group personnel replaced a Meson M01 LCW pump
  • Meson Fermi Test Beam Facility experiment T1008 began taking beam
  • Neutrino Area beams personnel begin the process of commissioning beam to SeaQuest

March 2, 2012 - March 5, 2012

NuMI reported receiving 9.39E18 protons on target for the period from 2/27/12 to 3/5/12.

  • Operations received Run Conditions for E906, but still waiting PPD Safety approval before sending beam
  • Main Injector (MI) enclosure 40 required access to repair sump pump
  • EE Support personnel repaired a MI quadrupole magnet power supply
  • There will be an eight-hour access on 3/7/12 for general maintenance and a Booster RF upgrade

February 29, 2012 - March 2, 2012

  • The Water Group isolated the Main Injector LCW system from CUB
  • Main Injector conducted a g-2 (g minus 2) study
  • EE Support repaired a Switchyard power supply to fix a ripple in the MTest beam
  • Experiment 906 (SeaQuest) may take beam this weekend

February 27, 2012 - February 29, 2012

  • Linac RF station trips
  • Booster RF station trips

February 24, 2012 - February 27, 2012

NuMI reported receiving 7.92E18 protons on target for the period from 2/20/12 to 2/27/12.

  • The EDIT School took its last beam on 2/24/12
  • A Booster bulk power supply (CE(400) needed work
  • Sparking problems troubled the Booster RF system
  • A Linac Klystron RF station (KRF6) went down and took about 24 hours to repair
  • H- Source was down due to a power supply controller card

February 22, 2012 - February 24, 2012

  • The EDIT School takes its last day of beam today (2/24/12)
  • Water Group confirmed that the Main Injector water leak only occurs when its LCW system is attached to CUB
  • FTBF experiment T-979 comes back for one day of beam
  • Operators conducted 750 KeV line and Booster injection tuning throughout these days

February 20, 2012 - February 22, 2012

  • The Main Injector LCW system was reconnected to CUB
  • The Excellence in Detector Technology (EDIT) School resumes taking beam
  • Power Supply personnel repaired the Main Injector MI-30 quadrupole magnet power supply
  • Linac personnel repaired a Linac RF station (LRF3)

February 17, 2012 - February 20, 2012

NuMI reported receiving 3.67E18 protons on target for the period from 2/13/12 to 2/20/12.

  • The Excellence in Detector Technology (EDIT) School took beam in the Meson MTest enclosures
  • Booster and Main Injector personnel conducted phase-lock studies
  • Fermilab Test Beam Facility (FTBF) experiment T979 completed their data taking
  • Linac personnel brought the H- Source online

February 15, 2012 - February 17, 2012

  • The Excellence in Detector & Instrumentation Technology School began continued to take beam
  • Meson FTBF experiment T-979 began taking beam
  • A Main Injector (MI-40) sump pump failed near midnight on 2/15/12 and held off beam until 2 PM on 2/16/12
  • A long time Main Injector water leak wasn't found, but had been isolated by having the MI LCW placed in a recirculation mode

February 13, 2012 - February 15, 2012

  • A MI person conducted a g-2 (g minus 2) study
  • The Neutron Therapy Facility treated two patients
  • The Fermilab EDIT School (Excellence in Detector and Instrumentation Technology) began and will run during the weekdays for two weeks
  • The Fermilab Test Beam Facility experiment T-979 resumed taking beam
  • Linac switched from the H- Source to the I- Source

February 10, 2012 - February 13, 2012

NuMI reported receiving 5.59E18 protons on target for the period from 2/6/12 to 2/13/12.

  • Switchyard personnel conducted studies for the Meson MTest area and for Meson split beams
  • Main Injector and Muon Rings personell conducted studies
  • Operations reported that the vacuum was holding in Neutrino Area G2 enclosure
  • Operators found a LCW leak in the Muon Rings

February 8, 2012 - February 10, 2012

  • Fermilab Test Beam Facility experiment T-1017 began taking beam on Wednesday, but an equipment failure halted their run on Thursday
  • A newly installed Booster phase detector had to be adjusted
  • A Linac Klystron RF station required repairs that held off beam for about 90 minutes
  • The Neutron Therapy Facility treat patients
  • Booster, Main Injector, Muon Rings, and Switchyard personnel all conducted studies

February 6, 2012 - February 8, 2012

  • MiniBooNE took beam
  • The Main Injector (MI) Lambertson magnet bake out ended on 2/7/12 around noon
  • The MI Lambertson magnet had cooled down by 10 PM and had its LCW valved in
  • MI began sending beam to NuMI on 2/8/12 at 1:30 AM
  • Interlocks personnel tested the safety system for the Meson enclosures

February 3, 2012 - February 6, 2012

  • Lambertson bake continues.
  • Problems with LRF2.
  • Beam to MiniBooNE.

February 1, 2012 - February 3, 2012

  • Shutdown to replace a Main Injector quadrupole magnet continues
  • Controls personnel upgraded the Time Line Generator hardware
  • The Neutron Therapy Facility continues to treat patients
  • Booster should begin accelerating beam late tonight or early on Saturday
  • Main Injector should begin accelerating beam late on Tuesday or early on Wednesday

January 30, 2012 - February 1, 2012

  • Linac's hot water system pump failed; backup brought online
  • Booster and Muon Rings personnel conducted studies
  • Fermilab Test Beam Facility experiment T-1018 completed its run
  • The seven-day shutdown to replace a Main Injector quadrupole magnet began on 1/31/12

January 27, 2012 - January 30, 2012

NuMI reported receiving 8.93E18 protons on target for the period from 1/23/12 to 1/30/12.

  • RF technicians repaired a Booster RF station (BRF17)
  • A seven-day shutdown begins tomorrow, 1/31/12, to replace a Main injector (MI) quadrupole magnet. Beam will go off at 2 AM. MI keys will be available by 6 AM. Other machines and experiments will conduct maintenance that fits within the seven-day time frame. Linac will also conduct maintenance, but they will turn on to send beam to NTF when needed.

January 25, 2012 - January 27, 2012

  • The Main Injector gap clearing kickers had caused problems
  • Neutron Therapy Facility personnel treated patients
  • A Booster RF station (BRF17) tripped off and would not reset
  • Main Injector will go down for 7 to 14 days to replace a quadrupole magnet beginning on 1/31/12

January 23, 2012 - January 25, 2012

  • The H- Source continues to have problems
  • Meson FTBF experiment T-1018 taking beam
  • Instrumentation personnel had to access Meson to repair a collimator
  • A NuMI person reported that the MI-62 LCW system was getting warm

January 20, 2012 - January 23, 2012

NuMI reported receiving 8.15E18 protons on target for the period from 1/16/12 to 1/23/12.

  • Operators tuned and adjusted the H- Source, the Linac quadrupole magnets, and the 750 KeV line
  • The NuMI beam permit tripped off several times on MI incomplete RF indications
  • A timing issue caused all the Linac low-level RF stations and quadrupole power supplies to trip off
  • Fermilab will extend its current run by two months, stopping around April 30th.

January 18, 2012 - January 20, 2012

  • Booster personnel upgraded solid-state modulators and power amplifiers and other RF work during an eight-hour access
  • Water Group personnel repaired a leak in the MI-10 service building
  • Neutron Therapy Facility personnel treat patients
  • Fermilab Test Beam Facility experiment T-1018 began taking beam

January 16, 2012 - January 18, 2012

  • Problems with Linac RF station #5 required replacing its Thyratron and Power Amplifier
  • The Neutron Therapy Facility treated a patient
  • Fermilab's Test Beam Facility experiment T-992 completed its run
  • Beam turned off eight-hour Booster access at 7 AM on 1/18/12

January 13, 2012 - January 16, 2012

NuMI reported receiving 8.86E18 protons on target for the period from 1/9/12 to 1/16/12.

  • Interlock personnel completed safety system testing in the Switchyard enclosures and the Meson line
  • MI personnel conduct g-2 (g minus 2) studies
  • Linac suffered from quadrupole magnet power supply trips
  • There will be an eight-hour access into Booster on Wednesday, 1/18/12, starting at 7:30 AM

January 11, 2012 - January 13, 2012

  • Meson Fermilab Test Beam Facility experiment T-922 began taking beam
  • Muon Rings conducted studies
  • The problems with the Main Injector kicker located at MI-10 were resolved
  • Neutrino Therapy Facility treated a patient
  • There will be an eight-hour access into the Booster on 1/18/12

January 9, 2012 - January 11, 2012

  • Booster took two hours of downtime to repair a RF station (BRF18)
  • A Main Injector LCW system sprung a leak in the Tunnel; Water Group personnel repaired it
  • Muon Rings personnel; conducted studies
  • The Fermilab Test Beam Facility experiment T-958 completed the present run
  • On Wednesday 1/18/12, there will be an eight hour access into the Booster tunnel for upgrade work

January 6, 2012 - January 9, 2012

NuMI reported receiving 9.32E18 protons on target for the period from 1/2/12 to 1/9/12.

  • Booster conducted aperture scan studies
  • A Booster RF station (BRF18) Tripped off and would not reset
  • Linac conducted an emittance study
  • Operators adjusted the H- Source's output several time throughout the weekend

January 4, 2012 - January 6, 2012

  • Thursday access/repair period.
  • Linac source change.
  • Booster clock problems.

January 2, 2012 - January 4, 2012

  • MiniBooNE beam permit trips due to a power supply (MBEX) drifting low
  • Fermilab Test Beam Facility experiment T-1019 completes their run
  • On 1/5/12, there will be a four-hour shutdown, starting at 6:30 AM and ending at 10:30 AM, for the Main Injector to investigate and possibly repair a bad vacuum valve. Other machines will also conduct maintenance and repair

December 26, 2011 - January 2, 2012

  • Meson FTBF experiment T-1019 taking beam
  • Muon Rings personnel conducted studies
  • MiniBooNE loses beam time due to problems with power supply (MBEX)
  • Operators tuned the accelerators
