About CountryCompass

CountryCompass, sponsored by USAID/EGAT’s Country Analytic Support project, provides

  • Country assessments,
  • A collection of data related to economic growth and post-conflict economic recovery,
  • Growth benchmarking tools, and
  • The Economic Contagion Tracker
  • A comprehensive collection of post-conflict and economic growth literature.

CountryCompass lets USAID missions view more than 50 country assessments completed thus far, analyze up-to-date data from a variety of international sources, and explore a library of recent post-conflict and economic growth literature.

Assessments

For the Country Analytic Support (CAS) project, Nathan Associates developed a standard methodology for producing analytical reports that provide a clear, concise evaluation of economic growth performance and post-conflict economic recovery in designated countries receiving USAID assistance. The reports synthesize nearly 100 data indicators from numerous international sources, including the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the Millennium Challenge Corporation, the United Nations, other international data sets, and host-country data sources.

Data

CountryCompass houses up-to-date data on each indicator used in these reports. The data are divided into two databases: economic growth and post-conflict. The post-conflict database, developed in 2007, is similar to the original economic growth database (2005) but is adapted to the particular circumstances of conflict-recovery settings. The post-conflict database incorporates indicators such as the Failed States Index score, the magnitude of societal and systemic impact, number of refugees and internally displaced persons per capita, and use of child soldiers.

Benchmarking Tools

CountryCompass’ benchmarking tools allow users to view and explore indicators from the economic growth database or the post-conflict database. Users may graph an indicator on a world map, view data for the selected country, and compare data on that country to data for (1) two comparator countries, (2) its region, and (3) income level and region. CountryCompass also allows users to view time series data and export data directly to Excel.

Post-conflict and Economic Growth Literature

The CountryCompass library is a clearinghouse for post-conflict and economic growth literature from international organizations, scholars, and research institutions.
