What is the NICBR?
It is hard to miss the cranes, construction, and congestion as we arrive at Fort Detrick to start a new work day. The construction of four new laboratory and research facilities within the National Interagency Biodefense Campus has been quite apparent. Did you know what happens to your solid waste?  It depends on where you live and work. If you live or work at Fort Detrick, waste materials that are not recycled are incinerated at Fort Detrick’s waste-to-energy facility.  If you work at the Forest Glen Annex, or live at the Glen Haven Housing Area, waste materials that are not recycled may be sent either to a municipal waste landfill or to the Montgomery County waste-to-energy facility.   Regardless of your location, it is important that harmful materials are kept out of the waste stream.

FORT DETRICK, Md. - Army leaders met here for day one of the first Net Zero Workshop, June 14.  The three-day conference brings together leaders from over 20 installations chosen by the Army to discuss sustainability practices and share information to better reduce energy and water usage as well as the amount of waste created.

As part of the Army's overall effort to conserve precious resources, net zero installations will consume only as much energy or water as they produce and eliminate solid waste to landfills. Instead of thinking about today, thinking about 50 years from now when our children and their families are here.
