JANUARY 25TH IS EARNED INCOME TAX CREDIT AWARENESS DAY

REP. FUDGE STATEMENT ON JANUARY 25TH - EARNED INCOME TAX CREDIT AWARENESS DAY

“The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) benefits millions of Americans. In 2012, it returned on average more than $2,200 in tax credits to working Ohioans.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. - As the new tax season approaches, Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) encourages qualified constituents to file for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) to avoid missing out on meaningful tax relief available to low and middle income taxpayers.  The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has declared January 25th as Earned Income Tax Credit Awareness Day.  Congresswoman Fudge applauds this initiative to call attention to the program’s benefits.

“I was pleased to vote recently for renewal of the Earned Income Tax Credit or EITC.  Eligible constituents have an opportunity to get money back from the IRS – as much as $5,800.  People who earned less than $50,000 from wages, self-employment or farming may qualify.  It is important for taxpayers to know however, that they must file a tax return and claim the credit in order to receive it.”

EITC is a refundable credit.  When the credit amount exceeds the amount of taxes owed, it results in a tax refund. Communities also benefit from the additional funds received by local families. In 2012, 952,000 working Ohioans received $2.13 billion in tax credits, with an average benefit per household of $2,238.

Free tax preparation assistance is also available for seniors and other eligible taxpayers in the Eleventh Congressional District and throughout the nation through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs. The VITA Program generally offers free tax help to people who make up to $51,000.  TCE volunteers have specific knowledge important to older Americans. They specialize in questions about pensions and retirement issues unique to seniors.

To find a VITA or TCE  tax preparation site near you between January and April you can use the online VITA/TCE Locator Tool or call 1-800-906-9887.  Congresswoman Fudge’s staff is also available to assist constituents with information by calling216-522-4900.
