2012 January 12

A sunny Martin Luther King Jr. weekend lies ahead. There’s a lot of great stuff going on in the City, both indoors and out!

Birdwatching at Blue Heron Park Nature Center – Whether you are an expert bird watcher or an amateur, you’ll enjoy your time perched on one of the Nature Center’s observation decks, watching the birds come feed right in front of you. Every day, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Electronic Waste Recycling in Williamsburg – Got an old computer or cell phone just sitting around? Come out to McCarren Park and make sure it gets disposed of properly. Saturday, January 14, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

MLK Day Special: Seneca Village Tour – Seneca Village was Manhattan’s first known community of African-American property owners, on land that would later become Central Park. Learn about the history of the village and what New York City was like at the time. Monday, January 16, 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.

NYC Audubon Winter EcoCruise – Guides will identify the sandpipers, harbor seals and other members of the animal kingdom who migrate to the New York area for winter. Free hot chocolate served on board to help keep you warm while you explore the harbor. Sunday, January 15, 2:00 p.m.

The Value of Water: Sustaining a Green Planet – “The Value of Water’ is an art exhibit about the element on which all life depends. The exhibit features the work of 41 visual artists, including Mark Rothko, Jenny Holzer, Wiliam Kentridge, and more. Saturday, January 14, 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Tropical House Walk – Shed your winter woolies and investigate Wave Hill’s collection of extraordinary tropical plants. Take a tour with Wave Hill Gardener Will Wallace to see ant plants, rain forest cacti and other rare specimens in Wave Hill’s Tropical House. Saturday, January 14, 1:00 p.m.
