Rice Bowl Oriental Restaurant
Asian, Chinese, Japanese, Thai | Casual

First, land in Tokyo and munch your way southward to Nagasaki. Cross the sea to Shanghai and circle the culinary provinces of China. Travel down through Vietnam to spicy old Saigon, then north to Thailand and Bangkok's savory dining riches.

Hours: 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

Mori Japanese Steak House
Japanese, Steak House | Casual | Moderate

Knives clang and salters rattle. Eggs fly into the air and miraculously land on the blade, or are pierced on the point, of a knife. Sudden, giant explosions of flame bring awed squeals from kiddies and startle the bejabbers out of old ladies.
2810 Sharer Rd # 8, Tallahassee
(850) 386-8449
Hours: 5 to 10 p.m., Sunday to Thursday; 5-11 p.m., Friday and Saturday

Longhorn Steakhouse
Steak House

Not to worry, Sister Fay, our psychic prognostications aren't all that accurate. Back in the early '90s, when the LongHorn Steakhouse set up shop on North Monroe Street, we gave it a year, at best. Yes. Well. Ten years later - last Friday and Saturday nights in fact - we found ourselves playing chicken for a space in the parking lot, and waiting 40 minutes for a table at that same LongHorn Steakhouse.
2400 N. Monroe St., Tallahassee
(850) 385-4028

Al Dente
Italian | Casual | Moderate

Like the late Lorenzo's, Al Dente would be comfortably at home in Rome's Trastevere quartiere, or suburban Ostia. So would the cooking, which, in the American absence of a primo piatto or pasta course, leans heavily to pasta and pizza main courses.
1002 N. Monroe St., Tallahassee
(850) 224-3600
Hours: 5-10 p.m., Sunday-Thursday; 5-11 p.m., Friday-Saturday
Reservations: Not Available

Cafe Cabernet
Fusion

Once it was an upper-tier drinks and munchies destination, with a rocking nightclub through the wall. Well, times and tempos have changed at Cafe Cabernet. The sometimes-raucous Cabstand, next door, is long gone. Its former square footage has been incorporated into much needed auxiliary bar and dining room space for the Cafe.
1019 N. Monroe St., Tallahassee
(850) 224-0322
Hours: 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Saturday; closed Sunday.

Chez Pierre French Restaurant
French | Casual to Dressy | Expensive

Chez Pierre is a Tallahassee institution, one as interwoven into the fabric of the community as the perennial political circus and the Springtime parade. It has been a favorite local lunch and dinner destination for a generation.

Hours: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday-Saturday; 11a.m. to 2:30a.m. brunch, 6p.m. to 9 p.m. dinner, Sunday

Restaurants In (or near) The Capital Area

Andrew's 228
American, Italian, New American, Seafood

Andy Reiss has a strong creative urge. At various times, various floors of his Adams Street Commons corner have been reinvented as Maxin's, Tutto Bene, Andrew's Upstairs, Andrew's Capital Bar and Grill and Andrew's Express. Offsite ventures have included the late Trio in Market Street and Andrew's North at Oak Lake Plaza.
228 S Adams St., Tallahassee
(850) 222-3444

Bahn Thai Restaurant
Asian, Thai, Vegetarian | Casual | Inexpensive

Traces of Thailand, Indochina, China and Indonesia turn up in the incredible 151 choices that expand Bahn Thai's dinner menu to something of a catalog. And they all sell for a mere dollar or two more than they did in 1992.

Guests choose from a 50-foot array of buffet brunchables that spans two sides of the seating area. Add to this the complimentary mimosas, champagne and hot and cold soft beverages - plus the background of mellow, weekend music by Jimbo Smith, or Johnny Whitehust, or occasionally even the celebrated Pam Laws - and the result is a pretty nifty Sunday show for $14.95.

Restaurants on (or near) Tennessee St.

Crystal River
Seafood

They're like an aging Islay malt Scotch, these Crystal River Restaurants. The older they get, the better they get. But that's in an overall sense. Nothing's aged about Crystal River's plain-and-simply fried, broiled, steamed or boiled seafood.
1968 W Tennessee St., Tallahassee
(850) 575-4418

Curry & Wine
Indian | Casual | Moderate

Two new addresses in less than a year? That's a whole lot of shakin' for one small restaurant. Late last winter, Curry & Wine International Cuisine opened in a south side shopping center at Capital Circle and Crawfordville Highway. Rather British raj we found it, with its royal red walls, high ceilings and proper crystal stemware sprouting fancy napkin folds.
325 N. Bronough St., Tallahassee
(850) 656-7200
Hours: 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Closed Sunday.
