Jack Reed, D-RI, a senior member of the Armed Services Committee, traveled to Afghanistan and Pakistan in January 2013 to get a firsthand look at security and political developments in the region and their impact on America's national security.
Upper Peninsula - October 2012 »
In October, Carl had a packed visit to the Upper Peninsula. He stopped by a 4th grade class in Gladstone, visited Engineered Machined Products in Escanaba, toured the construction of the Partridge Creek Diversion Project in Ishpeming, toured the Bete Grise Preserve and Stamp Sands in Keweenaw County, and participated in the 20th anniversary celebrations for Keweenaw National Historical Park.

Carl welcomed Upper Peninsula WW II veterans and their friends during their visit to the World Warl II Memorial in Washington, D.C. "A grateful nation will always remember and honor your service to our country in one of freedom's darkest hours." September 2012.
Michigan - August 2012 »
Carl crisscrossed Michigan during August. He attended a ribbon cutting ceremony at Fort Custer and saw the progress on the removal of the dam over the Boardman River in Grand Traverse County. He toured Avon Protection Systems in Cadillac and the Hammond Bay Biological Station in Millersburg. In the U.P., Carl visited the Clear Lake Education Center in Manistique; attended the transfer ceremony of the former Naval ELF property to Humboldt Township; met with Mind Trekkers at the U.P. State Fair; toured the Heritage Sustainable Energy wind farm; met with constituents in Schoolcraft County; and celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Michigan Wilderness Act in St. Ignace. In Grand Rapids, Carl attended a ceremony honoring Montford Point Marines and was briefed on the Wounded Warrior Traumatic Brain Injury Project.
West Michigan Visits - May & June 2012 »
Even the rain couldn't keep Carl away from the Tulip Time Festival Muziekparade in Holland on May 12. Before heading to the parade, Carl checked out the sweets and antiques at Simply Delightful, a bakery in Saranac and met with some Ionia County residents. In June, Carl spoke at the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new 217th Air Operations Group building at Battle Creek Air National Guard Base.
Afghanistan - May 2012 »
In early May, Sen. Levin and Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., traveled to Afghanistan to get a firsthand look at security and political developments in the region and their impact on America's national security. On May 1, Sens. Levin and Reed joined President Barack Obama and Afghan President Hamid Karzai at the presidential palace in Kabul as they signed the Strategic Partnership Agreement, which spells out the terms of U.S.-Afghanistan relations beyond the anticipated departures of U.S. combat troops in 2014. (Sen. Levin took the photographs of President Obama and President Karzai.) The senators also traveled around Kandahar and met with troops in the field, including soldiers from Michigan and Rhode Island and Reed's old unit, the 1st Brigade of the 82nd Airborne Division.
Michigan Tech's Mobile HEV Lab Visits Capitol Hill - April 2012 »
Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., welcomed Michigan Tech’s Mobile Hybrid Electric Vehicle Lab to Capitol Hill, praising the mobile lab as a test bed on wheels for innovations that will drive the future of green vehicle technologies. "Having a hands-on, mobile showcase for these technologies will help people around the country understand how academia, industry and government are working together to create the vehicle technologies of the future,” Levin said.
Southeast Michigan and Mid-Michigan Visit - April 2012 »
Carl visited several Michigan communities in April. In Ann Arbor, he spoke at the kick-off ceremony for National Robotics Week sponsored by U of M and the National Center for Manufacturing Sciences. At TARDEC in Warren, Carl gave brief remarks at the grand opening of the Ground System Power and Energy Laboratory. Carl met with members of the Pineriver Citizen Action Group at the Velsicol Superfund Site Monument in St. Louis and then toured the wind farm in Breckenridge. While in Mt. Pleasant, Carl sat down for an interview at WCMU-FM Public Radio and contributed to their pledge drive while encouraging other listeners to do the same. He discussed current events with students at Alma High School and met with constituents in Gratiot and Isabella Counties.
U.P. Visit - March 2012 »
Carl made several stops during his March 2012 visit to the Upper Peninsula. He met with the Upper Michigan Green Aviation Coalition in Gwinn about bringing green aviation jobs to the U.P. At Michigan Tech, he toured the new Mobile Sustainable Transportation Laboratory, a classroom on wheels with two powertrain test cells that provide cutting edge developmental tools featuring hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) components. Later, Carl congratulated Carl Pellonpaa, host of "Finland Calling," must-see TV in the U.P. for 50 years. Members of the Negaunee Vietnam Veterans Post #380 thanked Carl for his efforts in securing a Huey Helicopter for static display at their post. Finally, Carl checked out Marquette County's new snowblower.
