Japan donates US$ 281 million to UN to fund projects

28 February 2013 – Japan gave US$ 281 million in aid today to the United Nations funds in Afghanistan. The announcement was made at a signing ceremony that took place at the Serena Hotel in Kabul. The funds will support 14 projects being carried out by nine UN funds, programmes and agencies.

UNAMA PRESS STATEMENT: UN on the sectarian violence in Pakistan

KABUL, 26 February 2013 – United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is deeply concerned by the ongoing sectarian violence in Pakistan. On 17 February, in his second statement on the issue this year, the Secretary-General strongly condemned the terrorist attack carried out on 16 February in Quetta that targeted the Shi’a Hazara community resulting in more than 80 persons killed and nearly 200 wounded, many of them women and children.

Kabul Mayor says road construction a top priority

21 February 2013 - The Mayor of Kabul City, Mohammad Yunus Nawandish, said yesterday that construction and rehabilitation of road and footpath was the top priority of the Kabul Municipality and during year 1391 (2012-2013) a total of 42.1 kilometres of road and 106,299 square metres of footpath were constructed.

Afghanistan civilian casualty figures drop for the first time in 6 years

19 February 2013 – The number of civilian casualties in Afghanistan’s armed conflict dropped for the first time since the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) started documenting the trend in 2007, said a UN report released in Kabul today.

 Annual Report on Protection of Civilians
A UNAMA report released on 19 February documented a 12 per cent drop in civilian deaths in 2012. Despite this, thousands of Afghans are still suffering from the conflict, including a 20% increase in deaths of women and girls and a 108% increase in civilian deaths from targeted killings by the anti-Government elements.  SRSG BRIEFING TO THE SECURITY COUNCIL
In his quarterly briefing to the Security Council in December 2012, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Afghanistan, Ján Kubiš, lauded the achievements of the Afghan Government and Afghan society during the current period of transition, but warned about continued violence and human rights violations.
 UNAMA-SUPPORTED TV SERIES GOES ON-AIR
UNAMA-supported 15-part television serial, Kocha-e-Ma (Our Street) goes on air on 31 January. Kabul-based One TV (or “Yak TV”) will broadcast the series twice a week – Thursday and Friday – from 7:30 pm to 8:00 pm.
