TYPE OF PROJECT: Water Supply, Planning Assistance to States
LOCATION: The focus area is the Southwest Highland Rim: Wayne County and its principal towns of Waynesboro and Collinwood.
CONGRESSIONAL INTEREST: Blackburn (TN-07), Corker (TN), Alexander (TN)
NON-FEDERAL SPONSOR: Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.
BACKGROUND:
· The study continues Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) regional water supply efforts across the state.
· The study is evaluating existing supply and demand, projecting future use, evaluating potential solutions and recommending specific actions that can be taken by the state and local governments to assure an adequate supply of drinking water.
IMPORTANCE:
· The drought of 2007-2008 was one of the most severe on record and a harsh reminder that while the water supply in this state is abundant, it is not unlimited. Many of Tennessee’s 458 community public water systems were confronted by limits of their capacity to provide water to meet the demand.
· The drought elevated the need to update drought management plans and to develop a model for long-term, regional water resource planning that could be used anywhere in the state.
STATUS: Funding ($140 thousand) from Planning Assistance to States funds will be used to initiate the study.

SCHEDULE:
FY 2012 Completed Work: Sign PAS Agreement, draft scope of work, contract Phase 1 of scope to A/E firm.
FY 2012 Scheduled Work: Complete phase 1 of the scope of work (identify demand, existing supply, and potential new sources) and contract phase 2 of scope of work (design conceptual alternatives).
Completion: The Corps estimates that approximately 1-2 years will be required to complete the study.
