Obama committed to fighting global poverty

Many around the world are wondering what a new U.S. president will mean for their country. “Dear president what is your stance towards the third world countries,” asks an America.gov reader.

According to the Obama transition team, Obama will embrace the Millennium Development Goal of cutting extreme poverty around the world in half by 2015. The Obama administration aims to double U.S. foreign assistance to achieve that goal. “This will help the world’s weakest states build healthy and educated communities, reduce poverty, develop markets, and generate wealth,” according to the Obama transition Web site.

Obama also hopes more Americans will join in the fight against global poverty, perhaps by volunteering for such service programs like the Peace Corps, which arranges for U.S. citizens to help needy communities across the globe. His transition team has set up an online form for those interested in volunteering. Would you like to see the Peace Corps in your community? Post your comments below.

  14. It’s great that President Obama wants to fight hunger and poverty. Many people have to deal with hunger and homelessness so it can be great if they are helped out.

  26. Poverty is a global problem. strategy of doubling the U.S foreign assistance by 2015 would be helpful. its a long term solution that may work if implemented properly. in the mean time some short term strategies to help poor countries should be developed. hope to see a better world.

    I too am committed to fighting global poverty. Unfortunately I do not have the funds to do so on a global scale, but I do what I can to help out locally in San Antonio, Texas.

US president is sure that he will be able to reduce poverty to its minimum level till 2015 in all over the world. he expecting more support of foreign countries in order to achieve his objectives. But I think it is really difficult because present scenario of poverty is not looking like to fulfill the hopes of Obama. but always think positive because thinking better leads to feeling better,,,
