FHWA Excellence in Right-of-Way Awards

The 2012 Excellence in Right of Way Awards have been designed to recognize outstanding innovations that enhance the right-of-way professionals' ability to meet the challenges associated with acquiring real property for a Federal-aid project. One award will be presented from each of the nine categories listed below. FHWA may present a total of nine awards at the FHWA/AASHTO Right-of-Way and Utilities Subcommittee meeting in the Spring 2012.

WHAT is the FHWA Excellence in Right-Of-Way Awards Program?

This biennial awards program was developed by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to honor those that excel in streamlining or improving the real property acquisition process while ensuring that the rights of property owners and tenants are protected. The awards recognize outstanding innovations that enhance the right-of-way professional's ability to meet the challenges associated with acquiring real property for a Federal-aid project. The award categories include the following:

  1. Innovation
  2. Leadership
  3. Stewardship
  4. Streamlining and Integration
  5. Technical Specialty
  6. Peer of the Year
  7. Judges Special Recognition NEW CATEGORY
  8. Current Initiative NEW CATEGORY
  9. Right-of-Way Tribal Partnership NEW CATEGORY; from around the country

Our goal with the awards program is to spotlight and share great ideas from around the country that will benefit the right-of-way community and the public.

WHO is eligible to enter?

We accept nominations for any project, process, person, contractor, group, or individuals involved in a project or process that has used Federal Highway Administration funding sources to make an outstanding contribution to transportation. Anyone can submit a nomination (public or private industry). An independent panel of judges having diverse backgrounds will select winning entries.

WHEN are the entries due?

Entries must be submitted electronically by November 15, 2011.

WHERE will the awards be presented?

The recipients will be honored and award plaques will be presented to the winners at the 2012 AASHTO Subcommittee on Right-of-Way and Utilities annual meeting in Portland, Oregon, April 29 — May 3, 2012.

HOW should entries be submitted?

You can submit an application by completing the Nomination Form and sending it to the FHWA Division Realty Officer in your State. When applying, keep in mind:

  1. Entries should fall into one of nine categories.
  2. Entries should address as many of the listed criteria as possible in their category.
  3. Each entry must include a completed application form and a summary of the outstanding accomplishments of the nominated project, process, person, or group. Summaries must not exceed two type written pages, and the font size must be no smaller than 10 point.
  4. Entries should include at least two professional quality color prints showing the associated project or person(s) nominated. Each photograph or graphic material can be uploaded onto the electronic application. The photograph should be clearly labeled and identified with the entry name, description of the view shown, and photo credits. Please submit high quality image files. Illustrations are acceptable and must include entry name and a description of the illustration.
  5. Entries may be submitted in multiple categories by selecting the desired categories on the form.
  6. All materials submitted become the property of the U.S. Department of Transportation and may be used by the Department for its purposes. No entry materials will be returned.
