June 29th, 2012 Derecho
A long-tracked mesoscale convective system (MCS), classified as a derecho, initiated near Chicago and then tracked from northern Indiana across eastern Ohio, southwestern Pennsylvania, northern West Virginia, western Maryland, and all the way into the Washington D.C. metro. As the derecho crossed the area, wind gusts as high as 100 mph led to widespread wind damage across areas primarily south and west of Pittsburgh. There were several reports of structural damage, and damage led to a fatality when a barn collapsed in Muskingum county. There were also several injuries in the area.

Meteorological Synopsis
An anomalously strong ridge centered across the Southeast brought record heat to the Upper Ohio Valley with the area in a zonal flow on the northern edge of the ridge. A weak frontal boundary extended from northern Indiana into western Pennsylvania. Abundant moisture (1.75-2.00 precipitable water), strong instability (surface-based CAPE 4000-5000 J/kg), moderate shear (40kts bulk 0-6km), and a short wave just south of the boundary provided the ingredients for the long-tracked MCS.

WESTVIRGINIA ON JUNE 29 2012.
SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS RELATED TO A DERECHO ON FRIDAY PRODUCED
STRAIGHT LINE WINDS THAT CAUSED STRUCTURAL AND TREE DAMAGE.
STRUCTURAL DAMAGE INCLUDED THEBLEACHERSAND A LIGHT POLE KNOCKED
OVER AT THE FAIRGROUNDS AND RACETRACK OF THEREEDSVILLE FIRE
DEPARTMENT. IN ADDITION, THREE HOMES AND ONE DOUBLE WIDE
MANUFACTURED HOME WERE DAMAGED. THREE OF THE HOMES SUFFERED PARTIAL
ROOF DAMAGE WITH SIDING AND SHINGLES PEELING OFF THE HOMES. A
STAND-ALONE GARAGE ON ONE OF THE HOMES HAD ITS ROOF REMOVED AND WAS
DESTROYED. THE DOUBLE WIDE MANUFACTURED HOME WAS SHIFTED 6 INCHES
OFF ITS FOUNDATION. IN ADDITION, 15-20 TREES WERE DOWNED.
THE DAMAGE WAS DETERMINEDTO BE CAUSED BY STRAIGHT-LINE WINDS DUE TO
ALL OF THE DAMAGE BEING DIVERGENT AND GENERALLY OCCURRING IN A WEST
TO EAST DIRECTION.
