How to be a Good Neighbor

We Americans are not quite what people see on TV, and we are definitely different from our Korean neighbors. It’s our responsibility to help our new neighbors understand us as we get to understand them. Remember, we’re guests in their country – so, we can’t expect them to make concessions for our ways. It really is the other way around. We need to be the ones to make those minor adjustments - trust me, they’ll pay –off in major ways while you’re here in Korea. It’s not hard to be a good neighbor, just try some of these tips:
우리 미국인들은 보통 TV에서 보여지는 우리들의 이미지와는 많이 다를뿐아니라 한국인들과도 다릅니다. 우리가 한국 이웃들을 더 이해해 가면서 그들이 우리를 이해할 수 있도록 하는것은 우리의 책임입니다. 명심하십시요, 우리가 그들나라의 손님이라고해서 그들이 양보하는 것을 기대해서는 안됩니다. 사실 그 반대여야 합니다. 그들을 이해하고 조금씩 맞춰나가는 것은 바로 우리의 몫입니다 – 이를 기억하고 몇가지 조어만 따른다면 한국에서 생활하는데 아주 큰 도움이 될것이며 좋은 이웃이 되는 것은 어렵지 않을것 입니다.
Introduce yourself
자신을 소개하라
When you move into your new building, make an effort to introduce yourself to your neighbors. Being approachable from the onset will make it easier to sort out any potential disputes further down the line. Also, friendly neighbors will be able to give you useful information, like where the nearest pizza place is. Ask a KATUSA in your office to help you make your introductions if you have to. If you don’t learn any other Korean while you are here – at least learn how to say hello. An-yang-ha-say-o. This is all it takes to begin a friendship.
새로운 곳으로 이사하게 되면, 이웃들에게 먼저 인사하고 당신을 소개하십시오. 처음부터 다가가는 것은 나중에 있을 수 있는 갈등들을 해소하는데 도움이 될것입니다. 또한, 친한 이웃들로부터 가장 가까운 피자집 위치 같은 유용한 정보들을 알 수 있습니다. 필요하다면 카투사에게 도움을 구해 이웃에게 당신을 소개하십시오. 한국에 있을 동안 한국어를 안 배울 것이면 최소한 인사 정도는 배워 놓아야 합니다. ‘안녕하세요’. 이 한마디는 모든 관계 맺음의 출발점입니다.

Get to know a little about your neighbors. I’m not just talking about their cultural differences – but their lives. It will help you understand why they get upset when your children are still playing loudly at 9 p.m. if you already know they wake up early every morning and commute to Seoul for work. Also, if they have young children, for example, quiet evenings will be very important to them. And why not let your neighbors get to know you so that they are aware of your needs.
이웃들에 대해서 조금씩 알아가십시요. 그들과의 문화적 차이 뿐만 아니라 그들의 삶의 방식에도 관심을 기울여야 합니다. 이웃들이 매일 아침 일찍 서울까지 출근하는 사실을 알고있다면 왜 그들이 밤9시까지 시끄럽게 놀고 있는 당신의 아이들에게 화가 나는지 이해하게 될것입니다. 그리고 예를 들어 그들에게 어린 아이들이 있다면 아이들이 일찍 자는데 방해되지 않도록 배려하십시오. 그런 가운데 그들도 당신을 알아가게 될것입니다.

A common source of neighborly tension is the issue of noise disturbance. Be aware of shared walls and floors. Household maintenance can't be avoided, but be considerate of your neighbors when doing anything that creates excessive noise - like hammering or drilling. Try to keep noisy activities to the daytime, between 9am and 7pm. When you are watching the new blockbuster on blu-ray – remember – your surround-sound shouldn’t vibrate your neighbor’s rice onto to the floor.
소음 발생은 이웃들 간 갈등의 큰 원인입니다. 공동으로 사용하는 벽과 바닥을 조심하십시요. 집안 보수 관리는 피할수 없지만, 큰 소음을 내는 행동을 하게 된다면이웃들을 고려해서 오전9시에서 오후7시로 제한하십시오. 또한, 영화를볼때 소음이 이웃에게 방해되지 않도록 볼륨을 조절하십시오.

‘애완견’이 불쾌감을 주지 않게 조심하라
Dogs in Korea are usually itty-bitty things you can carry in your pocket. So, big dogs are a new phenomenon here, especially for children. Keep them on a leash- even in the elevator. And, while barking is normal dog behavior, it can be really annoying to your neighbors. Make arrangements for your pet to get some attention if you work late or during field exercises. Who knows, maybe one of your new neighbors wouldn’t mind taking your pup for a mid-day stroll. Finally, for heaven’s sake, pick up after your dog. It would be great if your puppy could use the facilities, but she can’t so YOU need to clean it up and make sure your teenage children know that cleaning the poo is part of the dog-walking deal.
한국에서 애완견은 보통 아주 작습니다. 그러니 큰 애완견을 키운다면 한국 아이들이 무서워하지 않게 조심하십시오. 엘리베이터에서도 애완견을 끈에 묶어놓는 것이 좋습니다. 그리고 짖는것은 애완견들의 평범한 행동이지만 이웃들에게 방해가 될 수 있다는 것을 기억하십시오. 또한 늦게까지 일하거나 훈련 등으로 장시간 집을 비울 때는 개가 관심을 받을 수 있도록 누군가에게 맡기는 것이 좋습니다. 혹, 이웃이 당신의 개를 데리고 낮 산책을 갈 수도 있을지 누가 압니까. 마지막으로 애완견의 배설물을 잘 처리하십시오. 또한 아이들에게도 애완견을 관리하는 책임을 가르치십시요.

If you're planning a party, be sure to give your neighbors plenty of warning. Let them know when it's going to start and how long you expect it to last. Heck, why not invite them too?

Keep your shared space clear

Keep your front door free of bikes and outdoor equipment. Ask your realtor if the building has a covered area for you to secure your bikes before you decide to store them in the hallway, which can be unsightly and even a potential safety hazard.
현관앞에 자전거나 야외 장비 등 통행을 불편하게 하는 것을 놓아 두지 마십시오. 자전거를 복도에 세워놓기 전에, 부동산업자에게 건물에 자전거를 안전하게 보관할 장소가 있는지 물어 보십시오. 자전거를 복도에 세워놓으면 보기도 싫고 위험할 수도 있습니다.
Barbeque Bye-Bye

Sorry, barbeques are no-no here in Korea. So say good-bye to your occasional grilled burgers. Koreans see them as a fire hazard and the smoke is a nuisance. If you can’t live without your grill, contact your local Family Morale Welfare and Recreation office to find out about approved areas to barbeque on post.
유감스러운 일이지만 한국에서는 바베큐를 할 수 없습니다. 한국인들은 화재의 위험성과 연기때문에 실내에서 바베큐하는것을 싫어합니다. 정 바베큐를 하고 싶다면 FMWR 에 연락해서 영내에 있는 바베큐 허가 구역에 대해 문의하십시오.

Recycling is very important in Korea. Some of us may be coming from towns Stateside that have a good recycling programs, to others this may be a new experience. If you’re new to the green movement, then the Korean way may be a bit daunting. Since each town and apartment complex does things a bit differently, the best bet is to ask for help. Your new neighbors - American of Korean - can help you sort it all out.
한국에서 재활용은 굉장히 중요합니다. 미국에서 재활용 프로그램이 잘돼있는 곳에서 온 사람들이 있는 반면 재활용이 생소한 사람도 있을 것입니다. 후자의 경우에는 한국의 재활용 방식에 위압감을 느낄수도 있습니다. 각 마을과 아파트 단지마다 다른 방식으로 재활용을 하기 때문에 재활용 방법을 물어보는 게 좋습니다. 또한 당신의 이웃들이 (미국 사람 혹은 한국 사람) 재활용을 하는 것을 보면서 배워 보십시오.

해외에서 주둔할 때에는 그 국가의 삶과 문화를 경험할 수 있는 기회가 주어집니다. 주위에서 일어나는 일들이 생소하고 이해하기 어려울수도 있습니다. 하지만 로마에서는 로마 법을 따르라는 말이 있듯이, 가끔은 그 국가 국민들과 공동적 가치관을 찾아 나가는것이 중요합니다. 우리들은 이 나라 국민들과 서로 보는 관점이 다를 뿐이지비슷한 점이 많습니다. 그들과 우리가 같은점은 감사의 마음을 표현하는것을 좋아한다는 것입니다.
Chuseok is by far the biggest and most important holiday in Korea. It is a time when family members from near and far come together to share food and stories and to give thanks to their ancestors for the abundant harvest. The holiday celebrations run for three days in late summer or early fall. People nationwide flee the city in order to return back to their family’s hometowns for the holiday, traditionally to visit relatives on their paternal side.
추석은 한국에서 가장 중요한 명절 중 하나 입니다. 추석에는 전국에 흩어져 사는 모든 가족들이 한 자리에 모여 서로 담화와 음식을 나누며 풍성한 음식을 주신 조상님께 감사드립니다. 추석 명절은 늦여름이나 초가을에 3일 동안 지속되며 도시에 사는 사람들은 자신의 부모님과 친인척을 찾아뵙기 위해 도시를 떠나 자신들의 고향으로 향합니다.
Early on Chuseok morning, the family gathers together to perform the traditional ancestral rites at their family’s burial mound. Multiple generations on the paternal side of the family take turns honoring their ancestors with bows, food offerings and alcohol made from the harvest yields.
추석 당일 아침에는 온 가족이 함께 조상님의 산소를 찾아뵙고 차례를 지냅니다. 집안의 남자들은 조상님께 직접 만든 음식과 술을 대접하며 경의를 표합니다.
After the memorial service, everyone enjoys a festive meal of these authentic Korean foods. First the men and elders eat holiday favorites like songpyeon – a sticky crescent-shaped rice cake – then it’s the women’s turn.
차례가 끝나면 온 가족이모여 앉아 차례상에 올려졌던 음식을 나누어 먹습니다. 집안의 어르신과 남자들이 송편과 같은 추석음식을먹고나면 여자들이 식사를 한합니다.
The day feels a lot like an American thanksgiving, minus the football and the Macy’s parade.
미식축구와 추수감사절 축제만 제외한다면 추석은 미국의 추수감사절과 매우 흡사합니다.
Communicate
대화
Make sure you communicate well with your neighbors. Yes, I know that’s particularly difficult seeing as we don’t speak the same language. Ask KATUSAs or Korean nationals you work with to help you talk to neighbors when facial expressions and gestures aren’t getting the message across.
언어의 차이 때문에 힘들겠지만 이웃들과의 대화를 시도하십시오. 얼굴 표정이나 몸짓을 이용해 원활한 대화를 할 수 없을 때에는 카투사나 같이 일을 하고 있는 한국사람들에게 도움을 청하십시오.

Above all – act like ambassadors of the United States – it’s your job as professional Soldiers to leave our host country with good impressions of our culture. And family members have to do their part as well. You don’t have to be Mr. & Mrs. Cleaver but, you do have to be courteous.
미국 문화에 대한 좋은 인상을심어주고 돌아가는 것도 직업 군인의중요한 의무입니다. 또한 가족 구성원들도 자신들의 역할에 충실해야 합니다. 완벽한 사람처럼 행동할 필요는 없지만 항상 공손하고 예의 바르게 행동하십시오.
