HOT is not designed for HAZMAT technicians.

Course Descriptions

Hazardous Materials Evidence Collection for CBRNE Incidents is a two-day course which prepares state, local, and tribal responders to respond to and document a chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, or explosives (CBRNE) crime scene. Responders in this course employ the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Crime Scene Search Protocol during identification and collection of potential evidence. Responders also examine the positions and roles of the Hazardous Materials Response Team (HMRT) and the Hazardous Materials Response Unit (HMRU). This course culminates with a scenario-driven practical exercise that challenges responders to demonstrate their skills in a simulated CBRNE crime scene.

Below are some, but not all, of the critical skill sets learned during this training program:

  • Properly identify the four levels of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), the equipment required for each level, and the conditions under which each level is used
  • Operate specialized survey and monitoring equipment at CBRNE crime scene
  • Identify the types of evidence and material or items encountered at a crime scene to be collected and used as evidence
  • Collect, label, and document evidence for packaging and transport
  • Document crime scenes through preparation of crime scene sketches and photographs

Hands-On Training for CBRNE Incidents (HOT) is a two-day course which affords participants the opportunity to develop and apply CBRNE incident response practices in a realistic training environment. HOT provides responders the unique opportunity to practice their knowledge and skills in the world’s only toxic chemical, biological, radiological training facility dedicated solely to emergency responders—the Chemical, Ordnance, Biological, and Radiological Training Facility (COBRATF).

Below are some, but not all, of the critical skill sets learned during this training program:

  • Operate chemical, biological, and radiological detection equipment
  • Identify types of dissemination devices, including direct deposit, breaking, spraying, bursting/exploding, and vector
  • Describe/classify explosive materials by type of explosion, sensitivity, and effects of the blast
  • Perform triage of mass casualties and support the evacuation of victims through the introduction of definitive medical care
  • Conduct mass and technical decontamination operations while wearing personal protective equipment (PPE)

Additional Qualifications/Certifications

None
To be eligible to attend HOT, participants must have completed the AWR-160 Standardized Awareness Training or another equivalent certified awareness training course. Participants should be able to don and doff different levels of PPE, lift more than 40 pounds, and meet CDP medical criteria.
