- NOvA collaboration members stand in front of the first installed block of the NOvA far detector in Ash River, Minnesota.
Each block of the detector measures 51 by 51 by 7 feet and is made up of 384 plastic PVC modules. About 170 students from the University of Minnesota built the modules, stringing them with optical fibers and attaching their endcaps. - IGoRR the robot and members of the Accelerator Division save the day, removing gallons of grout from a beampipe.
- Next Saturday, Sept. 22, the Fermilab Arts Series will present Broadway's Next Hit Musical. It's improv comedy at its tuneful best. If you live close, you won't want to miss it. Click the link for tickets and information.
- Thanks to all summer mentors and coordinators for making Fermilab's summer student programs a success.
- The first block of the NOvA experiment is now standing on its own at the end of the hall, and crews are moving the gigantic pivoting machine back to the north end, to get ready to build the second block.
- Read about the Dark Energy Camera in symmetry. DECam, which will help measure the expansion of the universe, will see first light any day now.
- Now would be a good time to check out our NOvA webcam. Things seem to be moving swiftly.
- If you signed up for the Photowalk on Sept. 22, you should have received an email letting you know whether you were among the first 50, and have a spot reserved for you. If you landed on the wait list, we will let you know if a slot opens up for you. We're still taking registrations, but new ones will end up on the wait list. Thanks to everyone for entering!
- What is antimatter? What does it do? How is it made? Don Lincoln explains.
- New Fermilab video on the mysterious, ghostly neutrino and the NOvA experiment, whose detector is now being constructed in Minnesota.
- Quark-gluon plasma is a state of matter that shows itself only at extremely high temperatures. Scientists are busy producing the stuff at Brookhaven's RHIC accelerator and CERN's LHC.
Don Lincoln explains what this strange state of matter is and what it can tell us about the origins of the universe. - Our friends on the NOvA experiment have been following the move since the wee hours of morning. Check out their coverage and follow along on Facebook here: http://www.facebook.com/novaexperiment. Follow them on Twitter @NOvANuz.
- Lots of movement overnight on NOvA's first block. We've set up a dual camera system so you can see it move into place on the south wall. Check it out.
- The move has begun. They're pivoting the first NOvA block about 20 degrees before moving it down the hall. Watch live and read more about it here:
- Here's a different view of the first block of the NOvA Far Detector as it sits in the pivoter, just to give you some sense of scale. To read more about the experiment, check out our press release here: http://www.fnal.gov/pub/presspass/press_releases/2012/NOvA-20120906.html
- How would you like to watch the creation of the most powerful neutrino experiment in North America, live as it happens? We've installed webcams at the site of the NOvA far detector in Ash River, Minnesota, and later today, crews will move the massive first block of the detector into place. We'll let you know when the move starts!
- Fermilab, Argonne, University of Chicago and others are developing photodetectors with picosecond resolution.
- Attention all local photographers. Fermilab will host a Photowalk on Sept. 22 from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Registration is free, but limited - we're only taking the first 50 people who enter. Read all about it below. Hope to see you there!
