Upcoming Weekend Activities
Pack your calendar with all sorts of fun indoor and outdoor activities for New Yorkers of all ages this weekend! The Federal Government is off for Columbus Day on October 10, so you will note that we’ve included some events for Monday as well. If we’ve left something fun out, let us know in the comments section.
20th Anniversary of the Re-discovery of the African Burial Ground: Don’t miss the 20th anniversary commemoration at EPA’s own 290 Broadway from October 4-8. Full event listings and details can be found here.
Boo at the Zoo: Enjoy family and kids’ activities, including magic shows, scary stories, costume parades, a hay maze, pumpkin painting and more. Saturdays and Sundays at the Bronx Zoo for the month of October.
Brooklyn Flea: The Flea features hundreds of top vendors of antique and repurposed furniture, vintage clothing, collectibles and antiques, as well as a tightly curated selection of jewelry, art, and crafts by local artisans and designers, plus delicious fresh food. Saturday, October 8, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. in Fort Greene (176 Lafayette Ave. btw. Clermont and Vanderbilt Ave). Sunday, October 9, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. in Williamsburg (East River Waterfront (btw. North 6 and 7 St).

Cooking Demonstration with Community Chef Christy Cedeño (Just Food): Saturday, October 8, 1-3 p.m. at the Bushwick Farmers Market, Maria Hernandez Park, Knickerbocker Ave and Starr St, Bushwick, Subway: Jefferson St., L
Cultural Connections Workshop – Latin Layers: Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum with the bright colors and vivid images of Central and South American clothing. Make and take home a unique mola, a cloth panel by the Kuna people in Panama. Saturday, October 8, 2:30, ages 3 and up.
Earthworks, Boat-making: Ever wonder what it would be like to get stranded on a desert island? How would you get off? Come learn about the art of boatbuilding, and compete to see who can get off the island first! Made possible by National Grid. Sunday, October 8, 1:30, ages 6 and up.
Hester Street Fair: Located at the corner of Hester and Essex Street, the fair celebrates the culture and rich history of the Lower East Side neighborhood. Open every Saturday from 10 a.m.to 6 p.m.
Hot Pepper Festival at East New York Farms: This spice-tastic, day-long event features a Chili Pepper Eating Contest, pepper-centric cooking demos and free samples of East New York Farms‘ hottest peppers and homemade hot sauces and salsas. Saturday, October 8, 12-3 p.m.

The Spooktacular Pumpkin Party at The New York Botanical Garden: Creepy hands-on fun for the entire family with spooky storytelling and puppet-making with Master Puppeteer Ralph Lee. Enjoy seasonal treats courtesy of Whole Foods Market. Monday, October 10, 10 a.m.
Volunteer with Added Value at Red Hook Community Farm: Fall is an incredible time to come out to the farm and work side by side with your neighbors, youth leaders and urban farm corps members. Sow seeds, harvest produce, build our youth garden and enjoy the local and regional produce at the Red Hook Farmers’ Market. Saturday, October 8, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Boo at the zoo looks adorable. Cannot believe I’ve lived in the Bronx 8 years and didn’t know about that. I will be taking my little ones next weekend.
Loving the blog and I chose this one to comment on, and while I might not live in the city I do love the articles presented here, especially the one on dogs and cleaning up after them.
