Kick Off 2013 With the Martin Luther King Junior Day of Service

Taking place each year on the third Monday in January (January 21* this year), the MLK Day of Service is the only Federal holiday observed as a national day of service – a "day on, not a day off." The MLK Day of Service is a part of United We Serve, the President's national call to service initiative. It calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems, including disaster preparedness. The MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems and moves us closer to Dr. King's vision of a "Beloved Community."

On Tuesday, January 15, theReady Campaign and the FEMA Individual and Community Preparedness Division will host a webinar that showcases the MLK Day of Serviceand help you start the new year on the right foot by serving your communities and showing others how they can make a difference. In addition to updates from Ready and the Individual and Community Preparedness Division, we will feature guest speakers who will provide an overview of the MLK Day of Service, describe some outstanding examples of local activities and let you know how you can help in your own communities.
