Boxer Statement on the Senate Vote to Reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act

All Twenty Female Senators, Including All Four Republican Women, Voted For Final Passage

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) today released the following statement after the Senate voted 78-22 to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA):

“The Senate once again passed an inclusive Violence Against Women Act to help protect women and their families from domestic violence. I call on House Republican leaders to pass this bipartisan bill without delay. With three women killed each day at the hands of abusive partners, there is no excuse for failing to immediately reauthorize this law.”

The bill includes a provision based on Boxer’s Child Protection Compact Act, a bipartisan bill that she introduced in the 112th Congress that would give the State Department additional tools to combat child trafficking, exploitation and enslavement across the globe.

The Child Protection Compact Act aims to facilitate a more targeted approach to child trafficking by authorizing the Secretary of State to enter into multi-year “Child Protection Compacts” with countries that are eager, but currently unable, to combat the high prevalence of trafficking within their borders. Countries that violate the requirements of the Compact could see their funding terminated.
