POV Registration and Licensing
Newly assigned or employed personnel are required
to register privately owned vehicles within seven working days after
arriving at Fort Gordon. Registrants must show a valid driver's
license, valid identification card, copy of the registration as provided
by the state in which registered, and proof of motor vehicle insurance.
Georgia law allows military personnel to license and register their
vehicles in the state without becoming Georgia residents. This may
be beneficial in that military personnel do not have to pay any taxes as
nonresidents, only a tag fee which is typically $20.00.
Nonresident military personnel can also obtain a Georgia drivers license
without becoming a resident. The cost is $20.00. No driving
or written test is required, only an eye test.
To receive a license, the applicant must be at least 16 years old and
must have held an instructional permit for one full year.
Applicants for an instructional permit must be 15 years. Applicants under the age of 17 must successfully
complete a driver education course approved by the Department of Driver
Services. All applicants, regardless of age, must also complete a
total of at least 40 hours of supervised driving experience, including
at least six hours at night.
All teenagers under the age of 18 must complete and pass the
Georgia Alcohol Drug Awareness Program (ADAP) in order to receive their
driver’s license. This course is taught in both public and private
schools in four one-hour sessions. Insurance
When purchasing car insurance in the area, beware of low-ball pricing by
insurance agents trying to get your business without providing adequate
coverage. The state minimum for liability coverage is not nearly
enough to provide reasonable protection in case of an accident.
Also, make sure that you have uninsured/underinsured motorist
protection, as uninsured drivers are common in the state.
