About

The inauguration of the first democratically elected president in Guinea’s history took place in December 2010, providing hope for Guinea’s emergence from political turmoil and repression. Abundant land and extensive water resources provides Guinea with the potential to serve as West Africa’s bread basket, and its vast tracts of forest land could provide a buffer against climate change. The robust U.S. assistance portfolio also includes programs to improve local governance and strengthen civil society advocacy across sectors; a health program focused on reducing maternal and child mortality, improving reproductive health, and helping Guinea maintain its low HIV/AIDS prevalence rate; and a substantial new program to improve the country’s capacity to control and treat malaria. USAID's cross-cutting approaches underpin all assistance programs in Guinea.
