Congratulation remarks of Ambassador T. Gfoeller at American Chamber of Commerce’s Annual General Meeting and Celebration of AmCham’s 10th Anniversary

December 15, 2010.

Blonder Pub, Bishkek

Dear AmCham Members,

I am pleased to be here for AmCham's Annual Meeting because I believe the work of AmCham is important for private business as well as for the economic development of Kyrgyzstan.  Since my arrival in Kyrgyzstan in 2008, I have found AmCham to be a valuable partner for the Embassy in promoting an improved business climate and stronger business ties between Kyrgyzstan and the United States.

Private businesses in Kyrgyzstan need advocates such as the AmCham that can promote dialogue with the Government, represent members' interests, and help educate the Government and the public about what is needed to improve the business environment.  You, the members of AmCham, know even better than I that this past year has been especially tough for private business.  The political and legal uncertainty of the past year made it difficult for businesses to grow or attract new investment.

I know these events have also been a challenge for AmCham.  Yet AmCham came through with several important activities, including meetings with new government officials, helping businesses catalogue the losses they suffered in April, and organizing donations from members for those who suffered during the violence in June.

Despite the difficulties over the past months, we should look forward with optimism to the New Year.  As Secretary Clinton emphasized when she was here recently, despite all the challenges of the past year Kyrgyzstan deserves to be proud of what it has achieved by holding peaceful, fair elections.  Now Kyrgyzstan needs to use this new opportunity and generate broad based economic growth that will benefit the businesses and people of Kyrgyzstan.  We at the Embassy will be supporting economic development in Kyrgyzstan, and we look forward to continuing to work with AmCham to promote business.

So I wish all of you a successful meeting and good fortune in the New Year.
